SB 1070 Causes National Uproar; Arizona Legislative Candidate David Smith Strongly Supports the Bill

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwire - October 12, 2010) -  Arizona made national headlines when Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed SB 1070, the nation's toughest bill on illegal immigration. SB 1070 was put in place to identify, prosecute and deport illegal immigrants from the state of Arizona. Many of the states legislature and running candidates support the bill. Notable names are County Attorney Bill Montgomery, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and legislative district 7 candidate David Smith.

SB 1070 unleashed immediate protests nationally leaving numerous divided over the issue. The response from Ms. Brewer signing the bill was profound, even President Obama spoke out about the bill. With so many people at odds with SB 1070, let's take a look at why Brewer signed the bill.

An analysis of the latest census shows Arizona's illegal immigrant population is costing the state's taxpayers $1.3 billion annually. In a state that's over budget $2.2 billion, immigration is the leading cause in Arizona's budget crisis.

Where is this $1.3 billion in state taxpayers money spent? The census shows it was spent in three main areas, the three areas currently the biggest burden on the AZ Budget. The $1.3 billion was spent on education, health care and the incarceration costs of the illegal immigrants.

Based on estimates of the illegal immigrant population in Arizona and the documented costs of K-12 schooling, it is estimated Arizona taxpayers spend approximately $820 million annually on education for illegal immigrant children and for their US born siblings.

The biggest burden on the medical industry comes in the form of uncompensated medical expenses for health care provided to the state's illegal immigrant population. It is estimated illegal immigrants are responsible for $400 million annually in uncompensated medical expenses, creating a huge burden on the Arizona budget and economy.

Lastly, the cost of incarcerating illegal aliens in Arizona prisons total almost $80 million annually. This does not take into consideration the severity of the crime or the monetary affect of the crime committed.

Arizona's Budget has an excess of $2.2 billion in spending and the state is cutting state funded programs across the board. When you look at the facts, it is clear SB 1070 will go a long way in helping restore Arizona's budget and economy and that's exactly why the bill is supported legislative candidate David Smith.
