Schneiders Introduces SmartLunch Meals for Kids

Parents of school-aged children plan 20 million school lunches per week Attention: Food/Beverage Editor, Lifestyle Editor, News Editor KITCHENER, ON--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 26, 2005) - Editors Note: A photo for this release will be available on the CP picture wire via PR Direct.

Busy parents get even busier this time of year as kids head back to school, and they are faced with the inevitable lunch-making chore.

With four million children returning to school this September, parents on time-crunched schedules are challenged to pull together a variety of nutritious lunches to satisfy their kids' healthy appetites.

Schneiders new SmartLunch line offers convenient meals that will make lunch choices easier for busy Moms and Dads while also answering their need for nutritious, better-for-you meals that their kids will enjoy. Parents can feel confident giving their kids SmartLunch for a school lunch, after school snack or on-the-go meal for extracurricular activities.

"Schneiders SmartLunch not only are great-tasting products we know kids will enjoy but also provide a wholesome meal - with no hydrogenated vegetable fats or oils - that parents will be confident giving their kids," says Theresa Shelton, Marketing Manager. "For example, the SmartLunch Bagel combo uses an assortment of better-for-you foods such as a 60 per cent whole wheat bagel, one per cent milk, and real fruit treats."

SmartLunch is available in seven tasty lunch choices in kit and combo formats. The bagel/cream cheese combo features a 60 per cent whole-wheat bagel, light cream cheese, mini turkey pepperettes, Craisins, applesauce and one per cent chocolate milk. The meat/cheese/crackers combo has eight transfat free wheat crackers, light cream cheese, mini turkey pepperettes, raisins, partly skimmed mozzarella cheese string and one per cent chocolate milk. Other choices include wheat fajitas with white breast of chicken pieces, and pizza, with traditional quality wheat crusts and 100% strawberry-kiwi juice.

"In keeping with Canada's Food Guide recommendations, we suggest parents add a fresh fruit and a vegetable from home to accompany SmartLunch," adds Shelton.

SmartLunch is available in the refrigerated meat section in grocery stores across Canada. Prices range from $2.99 to $3.29 for kits and $3.99 to $4.49 for combos.

For more than a century, the name "Schneiders" has been synonymous with great taste, tradition, and quality. Schneider Foods was acquired by Maple Leaf in March 2004. For information on other Schneiders products, go to www.schneiderfoods.ca.
