Schools Receive Top Marks in Homebuyer Poll, Reveals Swinton

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - May 16, 2010) - Catchment area for good schools is the most important factor when buying a new home, according to Swinton, the UK's leading high street insurance retailer.

Primary and secondary schools received top marks in the poll of 2,000 home insurance customers, scoring 34% of overall votes in the survey.

General appearance of a property came second with 22%, followed by postcode with 14% of votes. Transport links (10%) and a south-facing garden (8%) completed the top five priorities.

Females scored the appearance of a potential new home significantly higher than males with 30% citing this as the most important factor, compared to just 14% of men.

Twenty two per cent of men highlighted the significance of a postcode when buying a house, in terms of its effect on council tax band and implications for car and home insurance premiums. Men also cited a garage in their top five priorities when buying a property.

Steve Chelton, insurer development manager at Swinton said: "There are many factors to consider when purchasing a property but it's clear from our survey that schools are homebuyers' biggest priority.

"When buying a new home it's vital you arrange buildings insurance cover to start on the day you exchange contracts and if you already have contents insurance on your previous home, make sure the cover is transferred from your previous home to your new one on the day you move in."

  2. General appearance (30%)
  3. South-facing garden (16%)
  4. Postcode (6%)
  5. Transport links (4%)
