Schreiner University Shares Best Practices on Harnessing IT Providers as Strategic Partners in University Business Magazine

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwired - Jun 18, 2013) - Schreiner University Shares Best Practices on Harnessing IT Providers as Strategic Partners in University Business Magazine

Apogee, the nation's largest provider of managed residential network (ResNet) services to higher education, today announced its university partner Schreiner University has been featured in the online edition of University Business Magazine.

The article, written by Schreiner University President Tim Summerlin and Schreiner's CIO Candice C. Scott, outlines best practices taken by this Kerrville, Texas-based liberal arts institution to expand its network and increase university effectiveness. These initiatives were part of a long-term technology roadmap implemented after consulting with the non-profit organization, National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE).

One of Schreiner's initiatives included the selection of Apogee to upgrade its entire residential campus network, unveiling all new hardware and wireless access points, a 24/7/365 Help Desk and Network Operations Center (NOC) support.

According to Summerlin and Scott, "Having to function as both service provider and technology strategist limited our ability in both roles. Our institution would be better served by asking IT to develop and execute an internal strategic vision for the University while leveraging the core competencies of third-party service providers to deploy network infrastructure, administration and support."

Prior to outsourcing its IT services, the university spent a significant amount of time addressing student concerns and maintaining the wireless hardware for residence halls and campus-wide common areas.

Since partnering with Apogee, Schreiner University has been able to:

  • Quintuple bandwidth available to students
  • Expand campus-wide wireless coverage to more than 90 percent
  • Expand instructional services to virtual labs, allowing students to access production and analytic software programs that might otherwise be too expensive
  • Provide network access anywhere, anytime and on any mobile device

"Leveraging value and expertise from our IT vendor relationships has helped Schreiner achieve complex goals more quickly, with results that exceed what our in-house staffers could have achieved on our own," Summerlin and Scott added.

"Apogee applauds Schreiner's initiative in leveraging IT providers as strategic partners," said Chuck Brady, Apogee's CEO. "We're proud to contribute to the realization of a long-term technology roadmap by providing strategy and ResNet services that scale to meet the demands of Schreiner's increasingly mobile and tech-savvy students."
