Science Fiction: The Answer For Poor Economic Times!

Volunteers of Polaris 23 understand the value of an entertainment dollar in the tough economy.

Attention: Arts/Entertainment Editor, Assignment Editor, Books Editor, Lifestyle Editor, Media Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO, MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - July 7, 2009) - Unless you've been travelling the stars, you've heard that economic times are pretty bad.

So it's a breath of fresh air when something arrives to make the economy seem less harsh. And for the dauntless sci-fi fans that come together for the annual Polaris science fiction convention in Toronto, woes about the economy seem light-years away!

Polaris' organizers have claimed the title of "Best entertainment value in the GTA". In hard economic times, that's welcome news!

Proof positive that Polaris has its entertainment chops is evident in the stellar lineup of guests. Joining the fans are Matt Frewer (best remembered as Max Headroom in the 80's), Michael Hogan (Battlestar Galactica), David Hewlett and David Nykl (Stargate: Atlantis), and rare appearances by Claudia Black (Stargate) and Michelle Forbes (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek:TNG, 24).

The true value of the event comes from its lifeblood, the volunteers. Long standing organizers Monica Winkler, Alison Hawes, and Stephen Christian reflect on the "community driven" event.

"Sci-fi fans are a special breed. They want the world to be a better place," says Monica.

The fans are not just enjoying entertainment value, but also giving back to the community through charitable efforts. A highlight Polaris event is its Charity Auction, which raises $10,000 annually for the Gilda's Club Greater Toronto charity.

Alison adds, "I love channeling the passion and generosity of fans to help raise funds for a really worthy cause like Gilda's."

"After attending my first Polaris and having such a great time, I wanted to help out and be part of the event," continues Stephen. He sums up the fan culture, "Pay it forward!"

Polaris 23 will be held July 10-12 at the Sheraton Parkway Toronto North Hotel. Trial Memberships start at $15. For more information, visit www.tcon.ca/polaris, or phone 416-410-TCON.
