Scotiabank to Celebrate International Women's Day With a $30,000 Donation to Plan Canada's Because I am a Girl Initiative

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - March 06, 2015) - Scotiabank is celebrating the achievements of women and highlighting the importance of gender inclusion and equality with a $30,000 donation to Plan Canada's global initiative: Because I am a Girl.

"We recognize Plan Canada for their work to improve the status of girls and provide them with equal access to healthcare, education, protection, independence and the opportunity to participate in society," said Maria Theofilaktidis, Scotiabank Senior Vice President of Global Retail, Small Business & Wealth Management Credit Risk. "Plan's Because I am a Girl movement is raising awareness and starting important conversations regarding gender inclusion and equality, which we are proud to support."

"Plan's work across 70 countries has shown us that investing in girls -- and ensuring they have enough to eat, an education and a safe environment -- is the key to transforming lives, lifting families, communities, and entire nations out of poverty," said Kristy Payne, Vice President of Communications and Public Engagement at Plan Canada. "As we celebrate International Women's Day, we are also reminded of the real and unique barriers that girls face on their way to becoming women. We thank Scotiabank for their help in creating a brighter and safer future for women and girls that ultimately benefits everyone."

As Canada's international bank, Scotiabank is proud to help raise awareness through our sponsorship of the International Women's Day website, a non-profit philanthropic venture dedicated to keeping International Women's Day alive and growing.

"At Scotiabank, we are part of a diverse and global team," said Theofilaktidis. "Our ability to effectively understand and work with one another is critical to our current and future success. Equality of voice, opinion and contribution allows us to celebrate and learn from the diversity of our workforce, customers and markets."
