Scotiabank Place to Host the Fourth Annual Capital Hoops Classic on Jan. 27

Men's and women's games featured once again

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 1, 2009) - In conjunction with the University of Ottawa and Carleton University, Scotiabank Place announced today that the venue will play host to the fourth annual Capital Hoops Classic on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010. The latest edition of the Hoops Classic will once again feature two games: a women's matchup between the Carleton Ravens and the Ottawa Gee-Gees at 6 p.m., followed by the men's contest between the same schools at 8 p.m. Last year, the Carleton men defeated Ottawa 87-72 en route to a 27-1 overall record and the CIS national basketball championship crown, while the women's match saw the Ravens defeat the Gee-Gees 62-53.

This event is the fourth of what has become an annual regular-season affair between the two schools and will showcase some of the finest basketball players in the country. The 2009 version of the Ravens men's team will be led by veterans Kevin McCleery (Ottawa) and Mike Kenny (Ottawa), while the women, coming off their best OUA regular season at 14-8, will be led by OUA First Team All-Star Ines Jelic (London, Ont.). The Gee-Gees men's team is led by fifth-year guard Josh Gibson-Bascombe (Toronto), who enters the season with 1,128 points - 40 shy of setting an all-time record for the Ottawa men's program - while the lady Gee-Gees' Emile Morasse (Quebec City), a third-year guard, returns as the team's reigning top scorer and an OUA Second Team All-Star.

The first Capital Hoops Classic, held in January 2007, set a then Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) regular-season record by drawing 9,720 fans and saw the Gee-Gees edge the Ravens 64-62. Last year's event drew 10,523 spectators - another regular-season CIS record. The McMaster University Marauders hold the all-time CIS attendance record of 12,139, which was set during an exhibition tournament in October 2004.

The fourth annual Capital Hoops Classic will set the stage for the Final 8 CIS men's basketball championship, which will be held at Scotiabank Place from March 19-21, 2010.
