Scottish Compensation Warn of Limited Rights When Buying Fake Goods for Christmas

KENT, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Nov. 30, 2010) - Scotland-based claims specialists, Scottish Compensation, have spoken out about the danger of purchasing counterfeit goods as the Christmas season approaches, bringing with it a flood of fake items that put customers' rights at risk.

The news comes just as Scottish Crimestoppers announced that they are working with Trading Standards in encouraging people to call anonymously with information targeting counterfeit and copyright crooks.

The campaign is taking place in the run up to the festive period, when there is a massive surge in the amount of counterfeit goods which are launched onto the market at a time when people are often strapped for cash. However, the risk is that in buying these goods, people are opening themselves up to low quality and sometimes dangerous goods as well as contributing to a criminal movement.

The compensation personal injury experts, who specialise in personal injury, Scotland-wide, amongst other services including product liability, warned that a consumer's rights are drastically limited when they participate in the trade of fake goods.

A spokesperson for Scottish Compensation, commented: 'Product liability is incredibly complex with only the manufacturer of the product being liable in some cases, but in others also the retailer and distributor. Therefore, if this is found to be a criminal source, then the consumer could find they have no rights to claim for physical injury or property damage from the product, for example'.

A recent survey showed that 18% of Scots have bought counterfeit goods, with 30% of people saying they had no idea that they may be helping to fund organised crimes, such as drug dealing, human trafficking and firearms.

Councils throughout Scotland will be ready to pick up anonymous information all month long on the production and sale of fake goods.
