Scottsdale Plastic Surgeon Discusses Ideal Timing for a Mommy Makeover

Steven H. Turkeltaub, MD Advises on When to Consider a Mommy Makeover to Help Restore One's Pre-Pregnancy Figure

SCOTTSDALE, AZ--(Marketwired - Jun 21, 2016) -  Despite being one of life's greatest gifts for many women, having children can often cause several unwanted and potentially permanent changes to the female body, states Steven H. Turkeltaub, a board certified plastic surgeon in Scottsdale. Some of the most common physical changes that can accompany pregnancy and breast feeding include breast ptosis (drooping), volume loss in the breasts, redundant abdominal skin, stretch marks, a buildup of excess fat and a noticeable stomach bulge caused by disrupted abdominal muscles. Unfortunately, most women find these concerns to be impossible to resolve completely via diet and exercise alone.

For individuals interested in addressing diet and exercise-resistant aesthetic concerns following pregnancy, Dr. Turkeltaub notes that specific plastic surgery procedures can often help restore one's pre-pregnancy physique. At his practice, he says treatments received most often by mothers include:

  • Breast augmentation
  • Mastopexy
  • Breast reduction
  • Abdominoplasty (full or mini)
  • Liposuction

When two or more of these procedures are performed in combination with one another, Dr. Turkeltaub explains that the treatment plan is referred to as a Mommy Makeover. This comprehensive surgical approach is customized based on a patient's unique needs and desires, and though the breasts and abdomen are the two most frequently targeted regions, a Mommy Makeover is not limited to these areas should a patient have an aesthetic concern elsewhere on her body.

In regard to pursuing a Mommy Makeover after having kids, Dr. Turkeltaub stresses the importance of timing: "For women who are planning to have more children, particularly in the near future, I generally advise waiting until after they are done having children because any additional pregnancies can have similar adverse impacts on one's body and, therefore, negatively impact the outcome of a Mommy Makeover."

In contrast, the Scottsdale plastic surgeon advises those who do not plan to have more children to wait approximately six months after pregnancy (or three to six months after the termination of breast feeding for nursing mothers) before undergoing surgery. This should be enough time for hormone levels to balance, stretched tissues to contract and pregnancy-related weight to be lost, enabling a more accurate identification of particular issues to be addressed, he notes.

One additional factor that relates to the timing of a Mommy Makeover is having time available for the necessary postoperative recovery period. In a recent blog post, Dr. Turkeltaub writes, "When a tummy tuck is done as part of the Mommy Makeover (which is usually the case), most women will need approximately one to two weeks to recuperate before returning to either school or a non-physically strenuous job." In the event that abdominoplasty is not involved and only liposuction is combined with breast surgery, he goes on to note that the majority of patients feel well enough to resume non-strenuous daily routines after about four to seven days. In either case, however, he adds that vigorous exercise and strenuous physical activity will be restricted for a longer period of time.

Ultimately, Dr. Turkeltaub states that the Mommy Makeover experience -- including the procedures performed, the recovery process, and the final outcome -- will be different for every individual. For this reason, he encourages anyone considering this comprehensive treatment to consult with a respected board certified plastic surgeon to discuss a personalized plan of action based on one's unique concerns, goals, and future life plans.
