Scottsdale Plastic Surgeon Reveals What to Expect for Breast Reduction Surgery

SCOTTSDALE, AZ--(Marketwired - Nov 25, 2014) - Breasts that are disproportionately large for a woman's frame can be physically and even mentally debilitating, states Scottsdale plastic surgeon Steven H. Turkeltaub, MD. Quite frequently, this condition -- also known as macromastia -- results in significant back, neck and shoulder pains, indentations of the shoulders from the bra straps, changes in posture and even rashes and skin breakdown. Many women are limited in the types and duration of physical activities that they can engage in comfortably and have difficulty finding clothing that fits or allows them to better hide their large breasts.

At the Arizona Center for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Dr. Turkeltaub offers his patients different breast reduction techniques individualized to their needs and goals which can help alleviate the issues associated with overly-large breasts. Typically performed as an outpatient procedure, Dr. Turkeltaub explains that breast reduction surgery involves the removal of breast skin and tissue as well as the recontouring and elevation of the remaining tissue, resulting in a smaller, more natural-looking breast.

During the procedure, he notes that the nipple-areola complex will also need to be proportionately reduced and elevated to a more natural position based on the new size and contour of the breasts. Depending on the patient's specific indications, this can be performed either with the nipple-areola complex remaining attached to the breast tissue or it may require the nipple-areola complex to be removed as a full thickness skin graft and then later reattached in the appropriate position as part of the "free nipple graft" approach.

Dr. Turkeltaub says breast reduction patients have a few options for the type of incisions utilized during surgery but the most common approach he employs is an inverted "T" (or anchor-shaped) incision extending from around the areola, then down to the bottom of the breast, and along the inframammary crease. He states that this type of incision generally allows for the greatest degree of precision, predictability and flexibility when performing the operation. Most scars become fairly inconspicuous over time for the majority of his patients.

Following breast reduction surgery, Dr. Turkeltaub notes that patients will experience some swelling in the breasts that usually takes up to a year to maximally resolve. He adds that any postoperative discomfort, usually mild to moderate in degree, can be effectively managed with prescription medication and will subside relatively quickly. Though recovery times and postsurgical instructions will vary for every individual, he says that most patients feel well enough to return to non-strenuous work after approximately four to seven days, and full activities can generally be resumed without restrictions after about three to four weeks.

By doing so, he says that patients can feel more comfortable that they are receiving a higher quality of care and an effective treatment for their unique needs and goals.
