Scouts Canada Foundation Announces Scholarship Winners

Seventeen youth awarded $1000 each in annual scholarship Attention: Assignment Editor, News Editor OTTAWA/ONTARIO, MEDIA ADVISORY--(CCNMatthews - June 1, 2006) - The Fondation Scouts Canada Foundation today announced that it will award $1,000 scholarships to 17 exemplary students involved in Scouting across Canada.

Now in its ninth year, Scouts Canada's Reginald K. Groome Scholarship is awarded annually to support Scouts Canada youth members who are entering or continuing full time studies at a Canadian university or college. The purpose of the initiative is to enhance the Mission of Scouts Canada through recognition of scholastic and other achievement and to encourage continuous self-development on the part of its active youth members.
Applicants were required to submit a 200-word essay on the meaning of Scouting values. Other criteria included academic achievement; demonstrated Scouting history, involvement and achievement; and dedication to community service. The Scouts Canada Foundation Scholarship Committee made the selections from over 100 applications.

"We are extremely proud of this year's candidates," said John Rietveld, President and Executive Director of the Scouts Canada Foundation. "Reading their essays is an inspiring exercise we look forward to every year. Not only do they help us remember Scouting's vibrance and value in Canadian society - they serve also to remind us of just how accomplished and dedicated our youth are. We commend them on their superb academic achievement, and commitment to their communities and the Scouting Movement."

Funding for the Scouts Canada Foundation Scholarships is derived from the Fellowship Program. The scholarships, totaling $17,000, are presented in memory of Reginald K. Groome who, in addition to many other Scouting roles, served as Chairman of the Boy Scouts of Canada Trust in the late 1990s.

The Scouts Canada Foundation was established to raise, invest and administer funds to support special projects not within the field of normal day-to-day Scouting operations. Corporations and individuals may make either general bequests to the Foundation, or donations for specific projects.
