SCR-Tech Appoints Michael Mattes Vice President of Sales and Marketing

CHARLOTTE, NC -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 6, 2007 -- SCR-Tech, a subsidiary of Catalytica Energy Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CESI), announced today the appointment of Michael Mattes as vice president of sales and marketing.

Mattes joins SCR-Tech with 32 years of business operations, sales, marketing, engineering, and logistics experience, including more than 25 years in the energy and utility, chemical manufacturing and hazardous waste industries. In addition to a demonstrated ability to lead successful sales teams and marketing initiatives, his background includes a proven track record in exceeding sales goals, implementing successful pricing strategies, building customer relationships and driving service excellence.

Mattes will be responsible for all sales, marketing and customer service activities for SCR-Tech. He succeeds Bob Deneault, who recently left the Company to pursue other interests. Most recently, he served as vice president of sales and business development for Schneider National Bulk Carriers, where he led his sales team into new lines of businesses and improved customer relationships. From 1984 to 2005, he held several executive level positions including group vice president of Phillip Service Corporation, a leading hazardous waste disposal and service company. From 1980 to 1984, Mattes held positions of increasing responsibility in environmental engineering at Babcock & Wilcox Company, a world leader in power generation equipment design, supply and service including SCR systems for coal-fired power plants, where he was responsible for preparing bid proposals and negotiating license agreements. He began his career in 1975 as a production supervisor for E.I. DuPont, Inc., a chemical manufacturing company, achieving significant capacity increases and product improvements. Mattes earned a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Akron.
