SDTC Congratulates Government of Canada on 2011 Budget Investment

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 22, 2011) - Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) today congratulated the Government of Canada on the additional $40 million for investments in Canadian cleantech companies that has been committed in Budget 2011.

"The cleantech sector has benefitted significantly from the project funding, investment de-risking and capacity building endeavours SDTC has undertaken," said Juergen Puetter, Chair of SDTC. "The new investment included in today's budget will allow SDTC continued support for the commercialization of promising Canadian clean technologies, helping them get to market, where they will deliver economic opportunities to both urban and rural communities across Canada. This is a wise use of public funds because of the strong interface with the private sector — to date, each dollar of public money has leveraged $13 of private sector investments."

The cleantech sector is a crucial element of Canada's economy, diversity and prosperity while bringing about positive environmental change. Investments like the ones announced today will ensure that we maintain the momentum in Canada and continue to transform our economy, creating green jobs for the future. It means that more SME's, which are drivers of innovation, can create jobs and growth by bringing their technologies to the market, where they will provide environmental, economic and health benefits to all Canadians.

"This is an important message to the Canadian cleantech sector that the Government is helping them to be even more successful," said Vicky Sharpe, President and CEO of SDTC. "These companies are delivering returns, showing their global competitiveness through attraction of international capital and improving their ability to capture Canada's share of the fast growing cleantech market, currently estimated to be about $4 trillion annually."

To date, the SD Tech Fund has allocated $515 million in 210 clean technology projects, leveraged by $1.2 billion, primarily from industry. SDTC has a total portfolio value of $1.8 billion.
