Speaking from their own experience designing and deploying innovative search applications in the public sector, these presenters will address the wide range of use of Apache Lucene/Solr search, including search tailored to government, military intelligence, libraries and museums, and universities.

Increasingly, these public sector institutions are leveraging the economics and accessibility of open source to develop exciting new high performance search applications while leveraging flexibility and transparency of open source to build applications that better serve their diverse constituencies.

Lucene Revolution speakers that will address this trend will be:

Erik Arnold, Adhere Solutions: Solr/Lucene power search at some of the highest profile government web sites including the flagship Search.USA.gov, which offers a commercial grade search engine that can also service other government entities, along with content APIs to be used by either the government or commercial sector. By creating web services and code that may be leveraged by other entities this approach both saves the taxpayers money, and exposes government content to the public beyond HTML and PDF format, enabling development of additional applications built on government data.

Ching-hsien Wang, Smithsonian Institution: The Smithsonian Institution has created a one-stop search center for its diverse object collections from 40 databases of libraries, archives and museums. Using Solr, this search center currently indexes five million documents & records, and supports faceted searching and navigation.

Mats Bjore, Infosphere AB: Open source search (OSS) across the various intelligence communities within business and government has revealed both opportunities and obstacles. This talk will give examples of successful projects both from a client and vendor perspective, and point to key initiatives in Europe and in the US to facilitate exploitation of open source, both from a vendor and customer perspective.

Jason Eiseman, Yale Law School; Daniel Lovins & Jeffrey Barnett, Yale University; Tom Burton-West, University of Michigan: This panel of experts whose practical experience with implementation and scaling of Solr in the context of major university library systems will highlight key use cases such as how Drupal and Solr were used to improve the search functionality and usability of Yale Law School's library website; use of Lucene/Solr with ICU and language detection for the Yale Library; and scaling Solr to provide full-text access to millions of digitized books at a reasonable cost for the HathiTrust Large Scale Search project.
