SEC XBRL Mandate Support Available Now Through Bowne Solutions

Bowne Interactive XBRL Viewer First Solution to Test Data Against Stringent SEC Filing Criteria

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - February 11, 2009) - Bowne & Co., Inc. (NYSE: BNE) today announced that its Bowne Interactive XBRL Viewer™ and full-service tagging solutions offer support for the new XBRL validation criteria that forms the foundation for mandated XBRL submissions recently approved by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The final rule on XBRL was issued January 30 and it's expected that the stringent new validation rules will be implemented on April 13, 2009. These 100+ new and complex rules cover both technical and business reporting aspects of XBRL. Bowne's full service offering comprises both XBRL tagging and interactive education to ensure that issuers understand the mandate rules. The Bowne Viewer provides the ability to upload, technically validate, and preview XBRL documents at http://www.bowne.com/xbrl today -- before the start of the SEC XBRL mandate.

"Filers stand to benefit from getting a head start on these complex mandate validation rules by utilizing the Bowne Interactive XBRL Viewer," said Bill Penders, President. "Our full service offering, combined with the Viewer's mandate-ready review and approval functionality, is the most comprehensive XBRL solution on the market."

In addition to supporting the technical validation required for mandated submissions, the Bowne Viewer also supports the currently enforced SEC Public Validation Criteria (http://www.sec.gov/spotlight/xbrl/publicvalidationcriteria.htm). The SEC began checking XBRL submissions for these 26 validation criteria on December 15, 2008, and it's expected that these rules will stay in effect until the end of the voluntary program on April 13, 2009. The Bowne Viewer allows users to choose which criteria to validate against -- either the Public Validation Criteria or the Mandate Criteria -- when uploading XBRL documents.

More than 100 companies have turned to Bowne for unique and individualized support as they prepare to submit financial reports to the SEC in XBRL, and its innovative solutions will also empower companies to integrate interactive data into their workflow processes and seamlessly file XBRL submissions along with traditional Form types.
