Second Annual Power of the Purse Dinner Benefits Women and Girls Worldwide

Influential women gather to support Plan Canada's Because I am a Girl initiative

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 15, 2011) - Human rights for girls will be the focus of a fundraising dinner in Toronto on Thursday, November 17, attended by well-known women from the arts, media and fashion, with a keynote address from Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau. The second annual Power of the Purse evening is the creation of Associate Director and Investment Advisor Sandra Pierce of Macquarie Private Wealth.

Sandra is widely known as "The Bag Lady of Bay Street" for her personal and professional mission to help women avoid the fear of financial ruin, which is known as the Bag Lady Syndrome. This dedication to the wellbeing of women inspired her to assemble influential women to help those in parts of the world where raising healthy, educated girls can transform entire countries for the better.

"Women everywhere face specific challenges, but what young girls in developing nations have to cope with every day is greater than what we in privileged societies like Canada could ever imagine," says Sandra. "Instead of being frustrated by this, I chose to empower high-profile women in our community to take the lead in raising essential funds and awareness for projects that will make a real difference for those girls and their communities."

This year's dinner builds on the resounding success of the inaugural event in 2010, which raised $60,000 to support a girls' dorm in Tanzania, which accommodates 100 girls each year and provides a safe place for them to eat, sleep and study. That sum is even more remarkable because the event is limited to 50 women, proving that a small number of dedicated people uniting in common cause can have a major impact in the world.

"As the event gains stature, we raise more funds. For instance, it's a wonderful honour to have Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts on board as our presenting sponsor," says Sandra. "And our silent auction items represent the finest names in fashion, food, design and personal accessories."

Barbara Atkin, Vice President, Fashion Direction at Holt Renfrew will also boost the glamour quotient with a feature presentation titled "The Power of Adornment."

Funds raised at this year's event will support Plan Canada's community sponsorship program in Ethiopia. The project will impact 18,000 people in Ethiopia through school construction, early childhood care centres, teacher training, nutrition promotion and economic security projects to help women gain independence and access to small loans.

The Macquarie Group Foundation, the charitable giving arm of Macquarie Group, will provide staff fundraising support through its matching policy. The Foundation actively supports Macquarie staff around the world in pursuing their own community interests and passions. Power of the Purse is a prime example of this.
