Growing InfoSec "Unconference" Exceeds 37 Global Events and Expects 600 Attendees in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Feb 22, 2012) - Security B-Sides, a highly successful community-driven event built for and by information security community members, today announced the 2012 event details and speaker lineup for B-Sides San Francisco, being held February 27-28, 2012 at The Children's Creativity Museum from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. PT. The group that started with one event in 2009 has exploded into over 37 conferences across four continents involving over 100 organizers, and thousands of participants. B-Sides San Francisco 2012 will include 24 talks, 35 presenters, and one half-day training course. To view the full schedule of B-Sides San Francisco events, visit:

"We were thrilled to have over 80 talks submitted this year and even happier that the attendees of the event were able to help us select the speakers by voting for the talks they wanted to hear," said Amber Wolf, Organizer of Security B-Sides San Francisco. "This year we saw a 50% increase in registered attendees, selling out 600 tickets before the speaker list was released. We feel fortunate that our attendees trust the quality of content and continue to support this amazing community."

This year, some of the most widely anticipated talks and panels at B-Sides San Francisco include:

  • "2012: The End of Security Stupidity" panel by Amit Yoran, Kevin Mandia, Ron Gula and Roland Cloutier
  • "So you want to be the CSO" by Daniel Blander
  • "Across the Desk: Different Perspectives on InfoSec Hiring and Interviewing" by Lee Kushner & Lenny Zeltser
  • "Ask the EFF!" panel featuring EFF staff Dan Auerbach, Eva Galperin, Hanni Fakhoury, Marcia Hofmann, Jennifer Lynch and Trevor Timm
  • "SCADA Security: Why is it so hard?" by Amol Sarwate
  • "Metrics That Don't Suck: A New Way To Measure Security Effectiveness" by Dr. Mike Lloyd
  • "Mapping the Penetration Tester's Mind: 0 to Root in 60 min" by Kizz MyAnthia
  • "I Can Read Your Mind" by Will Tarkington

"B-Sides is unique, in my experience, for the quality of the audience. I see it as the place where the enthusiasts go," said Dr. Mike Lloyd. "I spoke at B-Sides last year and the connections that I made generated more continued conversation than any other talk I've given!"

The goal of Security B-Sides is to foster communication and collaboration while increasing the level of conversation. It provides a solid framework for similar conferences to be organized and hosted locally and worldwide. In the last year, B-Sides events were hosted in 24 cities including Berlin, Cape Town, Portland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas and Chicago.

Because the events offer smaller, more intimate networking atmospheres and breakout discussions, they foster strong audience participation and overall group interaction. For those that are not able to attend B-Sides San Francisco, online streaming of the conference is available via Ustream: Track 1 & Track 2. Ustream also has an app for viewing the B-Sides talks on mobile devices.

"Events like B-Sides are essential to the information security industry and the professional development of current and future Information Security leaders," said Lee Kushner, industry leader and B-Sides San Francisco sponsor. "Being in a position to provide the necessary financial support to guarantee that B-Sides San Francisco takes place is a blessing. I could not think of a better way to demonstrate my appreciation and gratitude to the community that has given so much to me and my family."

"This is an important event, in my opinion. In fact, it's one of the things that made the annual trek to RSA worth it again," said Bill Brenner, Managing Editor at CSOonline and CSO magazine.

B-Sides is continuing its rapid growth and has plans to host upcoming international events in London (UK), Algeria (Africa), and Australia, in addition to the US events in: Iowa, Austin, Charleston, Chicago, Rochester, Detroit, and Las Vegas.

This year's sponsors for B-Sides San Francisco include Information Security Leaders, Qualys, AlienVault, Lookingglass, Secure Ninja, RSA, NetIQ, and Astaro. Currently, other B-Sides events are looking for sponsors to get involved. For more information on how to sponsor, please visit:

Added Wolf, "The success of Security B-Sides events is due entirely to the participants, sponsors, and organizers that put in the time necessary to create a unique experience for all."

All B-Sides attendees with badges are invited to attend the after party sponsored by AlienVault at Club 6ix, from 8:00pm to midnight, located at 60 Sixth Street. The event will feature a local DJ and the highly acclaimed nerdcore artist Dual Core.
