SEIU Canada: Casino Workers Expect Full Union Recognition Soon After Labour Day

UNION FOR WORKERS AT CASINO NOVA SCOTIA IN LABOUR BOARD HEARINGS NEXT WEEK

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Sept. 1, 2007) - Employees of Casino Nova Scotia in Halifax are excited that they are now a step closer to legal recognition of their union, with four days of hearings at the Nova Scotia Labour Relations Board scheduled to take place immediately following Labour Day.

Halifax Casino workers, who are employed by Great Canadian Gaming Corporation (GCGC) at Casino Nova Scotia, launched a union organizing drive in mid-February with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 902 to win increased wages, benefits, job security and overall fair treatment in their workplace.

Casino workers in most departments cast ballots in a union certification vote on May 4th and 5th, and Security Officers at the Casino voted in a separate union certification vote on June 6th. In both cases, the ballot boxes for their certification vote have remained sealed by the Labour Board pending hearings scheduled to take place September 4th through 7th.

"SEIU looks forward to working with Halifax's Casino workers to win a collective agreement which will provide the levels of dignity and respect which they deserve," said SEIU Canada National Organizer Tony Tracy. "We are confident of the outcome in Labour Board proceedings next week, and look forward to opening the ballot boxes soon after Labour Day in order to have formal legal union recognition and to move forward towards bargaining."

"My co-workers and I are happy to be closer to seeing our votes counted," said Terry McGrath, a Table Games Dealer at Casino Nova Scotia in Halifax. "We have now waited for four months since our union certification vote, but we are looking forward to being able to win new benefits at the bargaining table."

"We are enthusiastic to see the conclusion of our long fight to have our union recognized," said Phil Dunbar, who works in the Slot Department of the Casino.

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is the largest and fastest growing union in North America, with 98,000 workers in Canada and 1.8 million workers worldwide.
