SEIU Canada Celebrates Canadian Women

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - March 7, 2007) - Union Locals of the Service Employees International Union across Canada are celebrating International Women's Day (IWD).

"It's important for everyone to celebrate the contributions working women have made over the years," says Sharleen Stewart, SEIU International Canadian Vice-President, "This is a time for people to come together and celebrate the progress that women have made but also to be mindful that we still have a long way to go in our fight for full equality."

On Mar. 7 in Saskatoon the "Making a Difference" conference will be underway. Topics will include Human Trafficking, Life of Women in the Armed Forces, Protection and Safety for Women and many other speakers on similar topics.

On Mar. 8 in Halifax there will be a protest march led by the Radical Cheerleaders and the Raging Grannies ending at the Status of Women office on Quinpool Road. The march will follow a mock trial of Stephen Harper at the Olympic Centre at 6 pm. The activities will continue at a free event featuring local female performers and renowned feminist Zubeda Dangor.

On Mar. 10, SEIU Local 1.on's Provincial Women's Committee has organized two Women's Fairs. There will be displays, guest speakers, loot bags for all who attend, and prize draws throughout the day. The two locations are SEIU Local 1.on main office, 2180 Steeles Ave. W., Concord, ON, and the Americana Hotel, 8444 Lundy's Lane, Niagara Falls, ON.
