SEIU Canada: Red Cross Home Care Workers in The Bracebridge Region Begin Strike Action Today.

BRACEBRIDGE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 30, 2009) - Home care workers employed by Red Cross staged a one-day strike in the Bracebridge region today calling on the McGuinty Government to address the crisis in Ontario's home care system.

"The women and men who provide home care support have been pushed to their limit. The McGuinty Government needs to take responsibility for the crisis in Ontario's home care system," said Sharleen Stewart, President of SEIU Local 1 Canada.

Red Cross is one of the largest agencies under contract with the government to provide home care services. Home care is the delivery of health care and personal support services in the home. The service enables seniors, people recovering from surgery and children with special needs to stay within the comfort of their own home- a more comfortable environment.

3,000 Red Cross personal support workers with SEIU Local 1 have been in a legal strike position since March 23rd 2009. Last summer members voted overwhelmingly (88%) to strike to address key issues. Two one-day strikes have already occurred in Sudbury and in Own Sound. After months of bargaining, it's clear that a resolution will only be achieved if the government acts.

"Ontario's home care system isn't working. The McGuinty Government has adopted a system that leaves the professional who provides key health services in the home living below the poverty line. The services our members provide are a vital part of the health care system. The premier must wake up and take responsibility now," said Stewart.
