SEIU Local 2: Jobs Saved at Racetrack at Least for Another Season

Town of Fort Erie comes through with plan to purchase historic track

FORT ERIE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 13, 2009) - The Fort Erie Racetrack, which was threatening to close down, will live to see at least another season thanks to a deal struck between the Fort Erie Economic Development and Tourism Corporation (EDTC) and race track owner Nordic Gaming Corp.

"They came through for our community", said Phyllis Kennedy, a racetrack employee. "This will make a huge difference for hundreds of families in our area."

The EDTC has provided the company with a $2.25-million, non-refundable deposit on the deal, which allows the racing season to go ahead even if an agreement to buy the track doesn't go through.

"It's the financial lifeline that allows the season to take place and preserve jobs vital to the entire local economy of the Town of Fort Erie," said SEIU Local 2 President Cam Nelson.

"We congratulate the Municipality for taking this proactive initiative to protect these jobs and we look forward to working with all involved to get this sale finalized for the long-term benefit of the greater Fort Erie community," said Nelson.

SEIU Local 2 BGPWU represents the largest group of Nordic Gaming employees at Fort Erie Racetrack and is the premier union in the racetrack industry representing over 1,200 employees throughout Ontario.

The Service Employees International Union is the largest and fastest growing union in North America, with 100,000 workers in Canada and 2 million workers across Canada, the United States and Puerto Rico.
