Seizure of Contraband and Unauthorized Items at Donnacona Institution

LAVAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - June 8, 2016) - Correctional Service Canada

Two seizures of contraband and unauthorized items were made in the last days at Donnacona Institution, a maximum security federal penitentiary. These seizures are the result of the efforts of security intelligence officers and correctional officers.

On June 3, 2016 at 5:20 p.m., correctional officers intercepted an inmate who was in possession of 42 Suboxone pills, two pills of Viagra, 46.1 grams of tobacco and several sheets of cigarette paper. The Sûreté du Québec was notified.

Then on June 5, 2016 at 2:15 p.m., a woman who intended to visit an inmate was caught in possession of 29.3 grams of hashish. She was arrested by the Sûreté du Québec.

The total institutional value of the seized items amounts to $7,000.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. These tools include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates and visitors.

The CSC has set up a telephone tip line for all federal institutions so that it may receive additional information about activities relating to security at CSC institutions. These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates and staff members working at CSC institutions.

The toll-free number, 1-866-780-3784, helps ensure that the information shared is protected and that callers remain anonymous.

The CSC introduced a complete smoking ban in all federal correctional institutions in 2008.
