Seizure of Unauthorized Substance at Cowansville Institution


COWANSVILLE, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Nov. 14, 2012) - On November 10, 2012, as a result of the vigilance of correctional staff, an object with suspicious content was seized near the perimeter of Cowansville Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary.

Upon inspection, a total of 12 pounds of tobacco was concealed in the object. The estimated institutional value of the seizure is $48,100.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) imposed a total smoking ban in all federal correctional facilities through a phased-approach on May 5, 2008.

CSC is strengthening measures to prevent unauthorized substance from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone.
