Seizure of Unauthorized Substances at Cowansville Institution


COWANSVILLE, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - May 2, 2013) - On April 30, 2013, as a result of the vigilance of correctional staff at Cowansville Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary, objects with suspicious content were recovered on the perimeter of the institution.

Upon inspection, a total of 276,9 grams of tobacco was concealed in the objects. The estimated institutional value of the seizure is $4,430.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) imposed a total smoking ban in all federal correctional facilities through a phased-approach on May 5, 2008.

CSC is strengthening measures to prevent unauthorized substance from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone.
