Semiconductor Insights: Qimonda and Micron Tie in Race to DDR3

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - March 23, 2007) - Semiconductor Insights (SI), the leader in technical and patent analyses of integrated circuits and electronic systems today announced that it is starting analyses on DDR3 devices from both Qimonda and Micron. "The arrival of DDR3, with the promise to double the speed of the previous generation DDR2 without a significant increase in power consumption, has been long anticipated in the market," stated Jenn Markey, SI's Vice President of Marketing. "The surprise for us is that we're seeing Qimonda and Micron DDR3 samples ahead of Samsung, the traditional technology leader in DRAM."

"DDR3 is the memory solution of choice for next-generation, high-performance computing and consumer systems, offering significant advantages including lower power consumption, higher throughput rates and increased module densities," said Bill Lauer, senior director of marketing for Micron's memory group. "We expect to be in full production with our 1 Gb DDR3 chips in middle of 2007 in time to supply DDR3 for systems coming onto the market. We also expect to have samples of our 2 Gb DDR3 chips available at that time."

DDR3 offers some significant advantages over DDR2. DDR3 promises data rates up to 1600Mb/s, which is more than double current DDR2, boosting the performance of computer systems. As well, DDR3 uses a reduced supply voltage from 1.8V to 1.5V, which will lower power consumption resulting in less heat dissipation and an extended battery life in mobile systems. Significant improvements have been made in package, pinout, and signaling for higher-speed operation of DDR3 memory. System stability can also be enhanced by the newly introduced master reset pin.

The DDR3 market is expected to be realized in 2007 with a market sweet spot of 512Mb and 1Gb devices operating at speeds of 800MHz and higher. DDR3 platform technology continues to innovate mobility, digital home, and digital enterprise applications to meet end-user needs for memory bandwidth and density, power and thermal management, and small form factor.
