TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 9, 2010) - Preliminary data released today by CMHC show that a rise in starts of single-detached homes in Burlington contributed to the increase in total starts in the Hamilton Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) last month. Starts were up in the Hamilton CMA by 94 per cent in June from a year ago.

For the first half of the year, total starts were approximately double the number from a year ago, bringing starts back up to the level prior to that of last year's slowdown. There have been 800 single-detached starts for the year so far as compared to 308 last year. Growth was strongest for starts of semi-detached homes and townhouses this year, and single-detached starts fell to less than half of all starts in the CMA. Indeed, semi-detached homes, although still only about ten per cent of the market, have never been as consistently popular as they have been over the past three quarters.

"Single-detached starts have picked up in some markets in the Hamilton-Burlington area," said Sarah Fong, CMHC's Senior Market Analyst for Hamilton. "However, more semi-detached and townhouse starts in recent months means demand has been stronger for relatively less expensive home types," added Fong.
