Senate bill moves AECL in right direction

Society of Professional Engineers and Associates (SPEA) appreciates Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette''s Private Member Bill S-225

Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, Energy Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO, PRESS RELEASE--(Marketwire - Nov. 25, 2010) - The Society of Professional Engineers and Associates (SPEA) recognizes the efforts of Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette's bill to generate more awareness and debate on Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL) future. "The Senator's bill reflects one of the solutions that we have been advocating for AECL," said Peter White, President of SPEA. "The future of the company requires a made in Canada resolution with private sector partners ready to provide capital and expertise to grow the company as well as government support."

"With billions of dollars being spent on new reactors, AECL has a tremendous future ahead of it," White pointed out. "What is critical for potential clients is to see the government's support for the company. AECL's competitors have government support in their operations and that has allowed them to successfully bid on contracts."

"The federal government needs to demonstrate that it is a willing and supportive partner for AECL to succeed," White said. "Senator Hervieux-Payette understands the need for a strong, vibrant Canadian nuclear industry. Her bill and the government's willingness to support it will help ensure the 70,000 jobs related to the nuclear industry remain here and grows. But if the government retains majority ownership without actively supporting AECL, then we are left with the status quo, which is unacceptable.
