Senator Kennedy to Kick off National Hunger Awareness Day Sorting Competition

LOCATION: The Greater Boston Food Bank, 99 Atkinson Street

Senator Edward M. Kennedy will kick off The Greater Boston Food Bank's annual National Hunger Awareness Day sorting competition with a visit to The Food Bank on Monday. The senator will welcome representatives from the 18 teams that will be competing throughout the week.

The Food Bank has held the competition throughout the week of National Hunger Awareness Day to help bring attention to those who are hungry or at risk of hunger in the United States. National Hunger Awareness Day is June 7, 2005.

Senator Kennedy will be escorted on a tour of The Food Bank then meet the team members, who will be sorting product. The competition runs Monday through Friday with two sort-offs a day Monday through Thursday and a single sort-off on Friday. Cirelli Foods of Middleboro is the two-time defending champion of the event.

The Greater Boston Food Bank distributes more than 24 million pounds of food annually to hundreds of hunger-relief agencies in a dedicated partnership to help end hunger in our region.
