OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - March 5, 2014) - Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today the club has acquired forward Ales Hemsky from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for the team's fifth-round draft pick in 2014 and the club's third-round selection in 2015.
Hemsky, 30, was selected by the Oilers in the first round, 13th overall, of the 2001 NHL Draft and is in the midst of his 11th NHL season with Edmonton. He has recorded 477 points (142 goals, 335 assists) and 303 penalty minutes over 652 regular-season NHL games for the club which sees him rank eighth in scoring among all-time Oilers. He has also registered 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) over 30 NHL playoff games, including 24 contests in the 2005-06 post-season which helped Edmonton to within one win of the Stanley Cup.
A native of Pardubice, Czech Republic, Hemsky is a graduate of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Gatineau (then Hull) Olympiques, for whom he contributed 197 points (63 goals, 134 assists) and 153 penalty minutes over 118 career QMJHL contests.
The Senators next see action this evening when they visit the Flames at Calgary's Scotiabank Saddledome at 9:30 p.m. EST. Hemsky is expected to join the club in time for tonight's game.
