Senators Designate November as Minor Hockey Month

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 3, 2006) - The Ottawa Senators Hockey Club announced today its plans to celebrate November as Minor Hockey Month at Senators home games, while also outlining minor hockey initiatives for the 2006-07 season.

The Senators minor hockey initiatives, such as the season-long T.E.A.M. Hockey Country program, are designed to benefit and support minor hockey players, teams and associations across the National Capital Region with fundraising opportunities, fundamental skill development assistance and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

The Senators will kick off their minor hockey initiatives proclaiming November as minor hockey month, which coincides with Hockey Canada's Minor Hockey Week from Nov. 4 to 12. The following is a list of activities and events scheduled throughout minor hockey month:

1. Fourth annual Tim Hortons Coaches Clinic

More than 700 coaches will attend the fourth annual Tim Hortons Coaches Clinic held on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Scotiabank Place arena. Coaches in attendance will watch, learn and listen as Senators head coach Bryan Murray and some of the best hockey coaches from across eastern Ontario and western Quebec, discuss topics such as skill development and practice planning.

2. Minor hockey starting lineup

At each home game in November, six minor hockey players will join the Senators' starting lineup on the blueline for the national anthems. Selected through the Chevrolet Future Sens program, the five skaters and one goaltender will be provided with Senators jerseys and socks to complete their NHL experience.

3. Guest referees

Each home game, the Senators will also welcome four minor hockey officials through Hockey Canada's guest referee program. From the Ottawa District Minor Hockey Association or Hockey Outaouais, the four officials will meet NHL officials prior to the game and take to the ice with the senior officials for the national anthems.

In addition to their T.E.A.M. Hockey Country program and November initiatives, the Senators will conduct a number of minor hockey programs at various times throughout the 2006-07 season. These include: the Chevrolet Future Sens, which provides teams the opportunity to play an exhibition game on Scotiabank Place ice prior to Senators games; the Bell Skills First Challenge, which focuses on player skill development and provides winners the opportunity to compete alongside the Senators in their own skills competition in February 2007; the third annual Scotiabank Girls HockeyFest in February 2007; the Esso Minor Hockey Festival March 10 and 11; and the Senators minor hockey ticket donation, for which the club will donate more than 200 tickets representing $10,000 to local minor hockey associations and teams for fundraising purposes.

These initiatives translated into more than $1 million in funds and gifts-in-kind to minor hockey across the region last year alone - a goal the organization is committed to once again in 2006-07.
