Senators set to host Opening Weekend 2009

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 6, 2009) - The Ottawa Senators announced today a number of interactive events and sponsored initiatives that will take place prior to each of the team's first three home games this Thanksgiving weekend at Scotiabank Place.

After opening the season in New York against the Rangers and in Toronto, the Senators will make their 2009-10 Scotiabank Place debut this Thursday, Oct. 8, when they host John Tavares and the New York Islanders at 7 p.m. The game will also mark the grand opening of Bert's, the newest restaurant and sports bar at Scotiabank Place. Senators owner Eugene Melnyk and Bert Inniss will host the official grand opening before the Senators' home-opener against Islanders.

Sponsored by Air Canada, Thursday's game will see one lucky fan win a grand prize road trip to Toronto to watch the Senators take on the Maple Leafs on Saturday, Feb. 6. The prize includes two roundtrip airfare tickets, a one-night hotel stay, game tickets and two Senators jerseys.

The Senators home-opener will see the return of Master Corporal Mike Trauner, who will take part in the ceremonial faceoff. A Canadian Forces member who lost both legs in a bomb blast in Afghanistan, Trauner dropped the game's first puck from his wheelchair when the Senators met the New Jersey Devils at last April's fan appreciation night. Trauner has undergone intensive physical therapy over the summer months to the point where he will be able to walk and stand to perform the duty at the home-opener.

The Senators' opening weekend continues when the Atlanta Thrashers visit Scotiabank Place on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. Sponsored by Metro, Kids Opening Night is the first of 10 Metro Family games, which provide families the opportunity to purchase a Metro Family 4 Pack, which includes four tickets, four hot dogs and four drinks for only $99. In recognition of Kids Opening Night, two children will take part in the ceremonial faceoff, after 13-year-old Amanda Nantsios sings the national anthems. Senators public address announcer Stuntman Stu will team up with an additional child to assist with his PA duties. The first 2,500 kids arriving at Scotiabank Place for the game will receive a Pascal Leclaire poster.

Opening weekend concludes when Sidney Crosby and the defending Stanley Cup-champion Pittsburgh Penguins visit Scotiabank Place on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m.

In conjunction with Metro, the Senators are encouraging fans to bring non-perishable food donations to the games on Saturday and Monday for the Ottawa Food Bank and Kanata Food Cupboard.

Each of the long weekend's three games begins with a pre-game party in the Red Zone (Gate 1 plaza). Starting at 5 p.m., each party features special games for kids, a live band and barbecue. Thursday also marks the regular-season launch of new Sens Store locations, and enhanced restaurant menus and concessions throughout the building.
