Seniors Get Tips From TopLine Federal Credit Union on How to Financially Protect Themselves

Guidance on How to Prevent Identity Theft to Maintain Good Name and Credit Standing

MAPLE GROVE, MN--(Marketwire - February 16, 2011) - TopLine Federal Credit Union staff joined Vernon Terrace Senior Living residents for Financial Wellness month by discussing ways to prevent the growing threat of identity theft.

The session, "Protect Yourself from Identity Theft," led by TopLine financial experts, Phill Curoe and Vicki Erickson, helped seniors better understand what they can do to protect themselves against the ever growing crime of identity theft. By providing education and tips on security measures attendees walked away with an action plan on how to defend their good name and credit standing. Tips included such things as treating your drivers license number as you would your Social Security number -- very guardedly, memorizing your Social Security number -- not carrying your card in your wallet, when traveling carry only limited personal identification, placing sensitive mail into secured mailboxes, refraining from sharing personal information without specific verification and disposing of sensitive documents carefully. The credit union also extended a benefit it offers to its members -- free confidential document destruction shredding services at TopLine's Edina branch -- to residents of Vernon Terrace Senior Living.

"Nearly ten million Americans fall victim to identity theft annually," says Harry Carter, president and CEO of TopLine Federal Credit Union. "Identity theft can happen to anyone; awareness, education and vigilance are key to effectively defend against becoming a victim. TopLine welcomes the opportunity to assist individuals in our communities with identity theft prevention tactics to help them maintain a sense of security."
