Sensors Expo & Conference Attracts Scientists, Engineers and Executives to See the Newest Developments in Sensing Technologies

2010 Event Planned for June 7-9 in Rosemont, IL

NEWTON, MA--(Marketwire - June 11, 2009) - Thousands of engineers, scientists and industry professionals representing 47 countries gathered at the Rosemont Convention Center this week for the Sensors Expo & Conference, the leading event in North America focused exclusively on sensors and sensor-integrated systems. The Expo and Conference was held Monday, June 8 through Wednesday, June 10.

"Sensors are everywhere and the Sensors Expo & Conference brought together many global industries that are impacted by this technology," commented Debra Brown, event director, Sensors Expo & Conference. "We had a very successful event with energy harvesting, MEMS-based system solutions and wireless networking taking center stage in the conference sessions and throughout the Expo Hall. We look forward to bringing this leading industry event back to Rosemont in June 2010."

Dr. Kevin Grazier, Investigation Scientist & Science Planning Engineer, Cassini/Huygens Missions to Saturn & Titan, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, opened the show with a keynote address about the ongoing Saturn mission Following his speech, Dr. Grazier went onto the show floor and spoke in the Application Showcase Theater about his work as a science advisor on the TV series Battlestar Galactica and the importance of putting science in science fiction.

On Wednesday morning, Beth Wozniak, President of Sensing & Control, Honeywell Automation & Control Solutions, spoke about interconnected sensors and their role in solving major world challenges including energy efficiency, healthcare, security, productivity, transportation, and environmental protection. Wozniak told a standing room only crowd, "Sensors can help solve our world problems and we have to think globally and make these solutions affordable and provide economic benefits."

Sensors offered an expanded conference program with 18 tracks. Highlights included a full day pre-conference MEMS Symposia organized by Roger Grace, President of Roger Grace Associates. The all-day symposium drew a few hundred attendees and addressed current and future applications and major issues associated with the creation of a MEMS-based system and its design and manufacturing/testing.

There were over 150 exhibiting companies at the event, which featured 46 new exhibitors; and the overall consensus from the exhibitors was that the event attracted a very strong and qualified audience of sensing technology buyers. "This year's Sensors Expo show has been another great year! It fits really well with our battery product mix. I plan to exhibit again next year because this is a great marketing tool for us," said Lou Adams, Sales Manager, Tadiran Batteries.

The Sensors 2009 "Best of Sensors Expo Awards" were presented to exhibitors by judges Melanie Martella, Executive Editor of Sensors and Ed Ramsden, member of the Sensors Editorial Advisory Board and principal of Sensorlytics LLC. Gold Award Winners were DTS, MicroStrain, PowerCast Corp., and SBG Systems. Silver Award Winners were HBM, MicroStrain, Infinite Power Solutions and Moog, Inc. Bronze Awards Winners were Cymbet Corp, Kionix Inc., Silicon Sensing Systems and VTI Technologies Inc. Honorable Mention awards were presented to National Instruments, Endevco Corp., EPCOS Inc., and Sensortechnics Inc. For complete information on the awards visit www.sensorsmag.com.

"This was HBM's first year back at Sensors Expo. We were pleased with the show's attendance and the high interest in our products and services. We were also pleased to receive a Best of Sensors Expo 2009 Award from the show's editorial staff -- thank you Sensors Expo for this distinguished honor," said Chantelle Thompson, Marketing Communication Specialist, HBM.

Show floor highlights included The Application Showcase Theater, where executives from ten exhibiting companies provided free educational sessions. The Application Showcase Theater was located in The Energy Harvesting Pavilion, which featured vendors that provide Energy Harvesting & Power Management solutions capable of capturing, converting, storing and delivering energy in a form that can be used to provide the power needed by the system it serves. Sponsors of the pavilion included Advanced Cerametrics, Cymbet Corporation, Infinite Power Solutions, KCF Technologies, MicroStrain, Perpetuum, PowerCast and Tadiran Batteries.

On Tuesday afternoon Hoffman + Krippner presented their first annual Award of Excellence in Student Engineering $2500 Scholarship to Duke University Senior Sandip Agrawal for his PhonePoint Pen, a human-machine interface concept that allows mobile phone users to write short notes in the air while holding the phone like a pen. Other students at the Show represented The FIRST Champions from Rolling Meadows, Wheeling and Prospect High Schools who demonstrated their hand built robots that were part of The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Midwest Championship team. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded by inventor Dean Kamen to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people.
