Sentence in R. v. Abdelhaleem

BRAMPTON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 4, 2011) - Shareef Abdelhaleem, 35, was sentenced today in Ontario Superior Court to life imprisonment for his role in a terrorist plot to bomb targets in Toronto and to one day in jail for his participation in a terrorist group, in addition to the four years and nine months already served.

On January 21, 2010, he was found guilty of one count of doing anything with intent to cause an explosion that was likely to cause serious bodily harm or death to persons or to cause serious damage to property, contrary to section 81(1)(a) of the Criminal Code, for the benefit of, or in association with a terrorist group, contrary to s. 83.2 of the Criminal Code. He was also found guilty of participating in the activities of a terrorist group, contrary to s. 83.18(1) of the Criminal Code.

Shareef Abdelhaleem has been in custody since his arrest on June 2, 2006. He has 30 days to decide whether he will seek to appeal this sentence.
