ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR--(Marketwire - Oct. 11, 2011) - Housing starts in the St. John's region increased during the month of September, according to preliminary data1 released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). September's housing starts totaled 181 units throughout the St. John's area compared to 151 units in September 2010. There were 72 additional starts recorded in urban centres outside the St. John's region, for a total of 253 provincial urban housing starts.

"Another large increase in multiple housing starts activity continued to boost new home construction throughout the St. John's area in September," said Chris Janes, senior market analyst with CMHC in Newfoundland and Labrador. "Single-detached starts, however, were flat in September, with 124 units recorded. The trend towards lower levels of single-detached housing starts in 2011 remains with this segment of the market down 14 per cent compared to a year ago," added Janes.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in September were up 14 per cent to 16,490 units compared to 14,402 a year ago. Single-detached starts increased five per cent to 6,262 units, while multiple starts increased 21 per cent to 10,228 units in September.
