September Housing Starts Higher in St. Catharines-Niagara

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 8, 2010) - Preliminary data for September 2010 released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) for the St. Catharines-Niagara Census Metropolitan Areai (CMA) show an increase in housing starts to 113 units from 85 units a year earlier.

A 38-unit rental apartment building in the City of St. Catharines boosted total housing starts in September. On a year-to-date basis, housing starts were 48 per cent above last year's level. Compared to the same period last year, new home construction was up in all but three municipalities. Housing starts in Niagara Region advanced 55 per cent due to a higher level of activity in both Grimsby and West Lincoln.

"September was another month of strong gains in new home construction as builders continued to replenish their inventories which in recent months fell to the lowest levels since 2006," said Ashot Karapetyan, Market Analyst with CMHC. "Demand in 2010 is coming more from repeat buyers, raising the proportion of single-detached homes in total starts," added Karapetyan.
