September Housing Starts in Halifax

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Oct. 8, 2010) - New residential construction in Halifax decreased last month compared to September 2009 according to preliminary data released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). There were 191 housing starts last month, compared to 299 starts recorded in September 2009. Single-detached starts increased from 99 to 105 units while multiple starts declined from 200 to 86 units.

"Continued strength in the single-detached market helped to partially offset the decline in multiple starts last month," said Tim Andrews, market analyst with CMHC's Atlantic Business Centre. "In spite of the monthly decrease, multiple starts increased significantly through the first nine months of the year compared to a year ago," added Andrews.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in September were up nine per cent to 14,401 units compared to last year's total of 13,193. Single-detached starts were down 12 per cent to 5,963 units, while multiple starts were up 31 per cent to 8,438 units this year. In the Atlantic region, 720 new units were started in September 2010 compared to 969 units during the same period in 2009.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable homes. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and assist consumers and the housing industry in making vital decisions.
