September Housing Starts in New Brunswick

MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - Oct. 8, 2010) - Residential construction in New Brunswick's urban centres was down in September according to figures released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Preliminary data(1) indicate that a total of 153 starts were recorded during the month compared to 242 starts for the same period in 2009.

"The year-over-year decline in activity for the month of September is the result of a significant decrease in both single and multiple starts in New Brunswick's urban centres," said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's senior market analyst for New Brunswick. During the month of September, 44 multiple starts were recorded in provincial urban centres compared to 64 units for the same period last year.

Single starts were also lower in September, with a 39 per cent decline to 109 units. In comparison, a total of 178 single starts were recorded during the same month last year. On a year-to-date basis, single starts are up three per cent to 1,002 units. "The year-to- date rebound in single starts in Greater Moncton has been offset by moderate declines in both Fredericton and Saint John," added Gautreau.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in September were up nine per cent to 14,401 units compared to last year's total of 13,193. Single-detached starts were down 12 per cent to 5,963 units, while multiple starts were up 31 per cent to 8,438 units this year. In the Atlantic region, 720 new units were started in September 2010 compared to 969 units during the same period in 2009.
