September Housing Starts Up in Windsor

WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 8, 2010) - According to preliminary data released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), housing starts in the Windsor Census Metropolitan Area1 (CMA) totaled 42 units in September, up 50 per cent from the 28 units started in September 2009.

"After a minor slowdown in August, residential construction is once again trending up after bottoming out in 2009," said Margot Stevenson, Market Analyst for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. "On a year-to-date basis, starts in Windsor are 71per cent ahead of their 2009 level," added Stevenson.

Single-detached homes represented the majority of all starts in the Windsor area in September 2010. They reached 37 units, up 68 per cent from September 2009. Construction also began on three townhomes and two apartment units. Year-to-date, builders started 342 single-detached homes, 14 semi-detached homes, 50 townhouse units and 18 apartment units in the Windsor CMA.
