Seventh Generation Congratulates Vermont Government on Passing Bill S.239 for Toxic Substances Reform

Seventh Generation Recognizes the Milestone of Toxic Chemical Reform in Vermont

BURLINGTON, VT--(Marketwired - May 12, 2014) - Today, Seventh Generation, the nation's leading brand of non-toxic and renewable bio-based household, baby and personal care solutions, congratulates the state of Vermont for their major step towards reforming toxic chemical regulations. Just two weeks after presenting over 120,000 signatures to Congress urging for an overhaul of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), Seventh Generation was proud to see Bill S.329 pass with a vote of 26-3 in their home state of Vermont.

The new legislation gives the Department of Health new authority to ban certain chemicals outright, or require manufacturers to affix warning labels to products; if companies are unwilling to seek safe alternatives or obtain a waiver for chemicals deemed hazardous, the substances will be banned. The bill specifically regulates products marketed to children ages 12 and under, and despite some pushback from select Vermont businesses, the bill will have an extremely positive impact on the health and safety of Vermont residents.

"This has been a long battle for us, and we're thrilled to see that some of the first major steps towards stricter toxic chemical regulation is happening right here in Seventh Generation's home state," said John Replogle, President and CEO, Seventh Generation. "As we learned over the last few months, there are hundreds of thousands of like-minded individuals in this country who are concerned for the safety of their families. The passing of this bill is just one of many changes that need to happen in our country, and we're excited to see the power behind this influential group of citizens create change."

Following the lead from California, Maine and Washington's state legislation, the new bill ensures that products produced in Vermont will undergo the proper scrutiny to keep families safe. Tireless lobbying from environmental partners, such as the Vermont Conservation of Voters and the Vermont Public Interest Research Group, pushed this initiative past the finish line, and without their efforts Vermont would not be celebrating this massive victory. Seventh Generation celebrates this as an opportunity to further explore "green chemistry" and drive innovation in this field, and welcomes the push for a cleaner and healthier Vermont.
