Unlike other major environmental laws, TSCA has never been updated and has proven to be an ineffective law for regulating chemicals. For the past 30 years, the law has allowed 62,000 chemicals to remain on the market without required testing.
With capes, masks and petitions in hand, comes a new generation of activists ready to make a change. Over the next month, Seventh Generation's Toxin Freedom Fighters and partners, including Safer Chemicals Healthy Families; national parenting bloggers Mike Adamick, Unruly Things, Dear Baby, Baby Meets City and The Lovely Owls; a cadre of influential mom bloggers; and additional online and offline grassroots influencers, will work to garner 100,000 signatures from individuals across the country.
At the end of April 2014, Seventh Generation, along with The Toxin Freedom Fighters and partners, will head to Washington, D.C. to present the petition and urge Congress to pass meaningful chemical reform to protect public health and the environment.
The talk of change to reform chemical safety among the business community started in December 2013 when Seventh Generation, along with the American Sustainable Business Council and many of the country's leading consumer brands, established a new coalition "Companies for Safer Chemicals." The coalition understands that stronger chemical policy reform is good for business, and works to educate consumers and policymakers about the business case for reform.
