DEARBORN, MI--(Marketwired - April 04, 2014) - Severstal North America, a leading steel producer in the United States and a subsidiary of Severstal, a global steel and mining company, announced the creation of a community advisory council in Dearborn, Mich. that will connect the company with organizations, local and national non-profit groups, as well as educators and other community leaders. The new council stems from dialogue initiated by Severstal following a series of recent plant tours and town hall meetings that provided an insider's view into the company's nearly $1.7 billion modernization of its plant.
"We're forming this council to make more meaningful and transparent connections with our neighbors," said Saikat Dey, CEO, Severstal North America. "The advisory council will provide an important touchstone with the surrounding public to make sure that we are all working together to create a healthy, thriving community both now and into the future."
In addition to the creation of the council, Severstal Dearborn will facilitate additional public tours and town halls meetings in the near term.
"We are a significant economic engine in southeast Michigan," Dey said. "Operating in the Detroit area -- in the heart of the nation's manufacturing center -- brings tremendous value to us. We believe that working together we can leverage the talent, creativity and legacy of the metro area to benefit everyone."
In 2004, Severstal purchased the historic Ford Rouge steelmaking plant out of bankruptcy. The company is one of the largest employers in Wayne County with production capacity of 2.5 million tons of automotive-grade flat rolled steel. Severstal's modernization boosted the efficiency of the plant, further reduced emissions, and increased its ability to produce advanced high-strength steels for a variety of markets and applications.
