Sexualité et arthrite

A New Sexuality and Arthritis Brochure for People Living with Arthritis Attention: Health/Medical Editor MONTRÉAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - May 25, 2005) - The Arthritis Society - Quebec Division is launching a new brochure on sexuality and arthritis entitled Sexualité et arthrite. Authored by Dr. Monique Camerlain, Rheumatologist, and a team of invaluable collaborators, this brochure aims to break taboos and answer a number of questions often asked by people with arthritis.

"A recent study confirms the pressing need for educational programs on sex and arthritis geared toward patients and health care professionals, said Dr. Camerlain at today's launch. In order to increase communication between physicians and patients, more work needs to be done to raise physicians' awareness of the sexual difficulties experienced by people with arthritis and other chronic diseases. This study also shows that partnership between medical experts and patient associations is essential to the successful development and implementation of such programs."

"Arthritis often translates into unbearable pain, added Jean Légaré, who has the disease himself. Unfortunately, this constant pain doesn't leave much room in one's life for sex!"

The sexuality and arthritis brochure was published thanks to an unrestricted educational grant by Pfizer Canada and produced in collaboration with the Quebec Sexual Medicine Association. It will be distributed free of charge by health and social service agencies.

The Arthritis Society is the only not for profit organisation entirely devoted to providing information on arthritis, community support and research-based solutions to the four million Canadians living with this disease. Since its creation in 1949, the Society has contributed more than 130 million dollars to research aimed at developing better treatments and finding a cure for this disabling disease.
