Sg2 Forecasts Inpatient Services to Decline 1.9% and Outpatient Services to Grow 30% Over the Next Decade

Future-Focused Organization Unveils 10-Year National Forecast at Annual Flagship Event

SKOKIE, IL--(Marketwire - June 9, 2010) -  Sg2, a future-focused health care information company, kicked off its 7th Annual Business and Technology Forecast (ABTF) conference series today at its Chicago North Shore headquarters. The theme, Facing Facts: Demonstrating Value in the Reform Era, builds upon the importance of developing and implementing coordinated Systems of CARE (Clinical Alignment and Resource Effectiveness) in this challenging climate. Targeted to senior health care leadership teams, short- and long-term imperatives for ensuring smart growth and performance improvement will be explored from business, operational and clinical perspectives.

With health reform in place, the combination of new payment incentives, a new insurance marketplace and millions of new enrollees will change the fundamental rules of the game over the coming decade. During ABTF, findings from Sg2's 10-year Impact of Change® disease-based forecasts and the implications of reform will be revealed, including:

  • Between 2010 and 2020, the demand for inpatient services will decrease by 1.9% while outpatient services will significantly increase by 30%. This is in direct response to reform mandates to reduce potentially avoidable admissions and 30-day readmissions.

  • Over the next decade, urgent emergency department (ED) utilization for minor, low and moderate severity cases will increase by 15%, with peak saturation in 2016 and a gradual tapering off starting in 2018. This reflects the millions of uninsured individuals who will obtain mandatory coverage and the many who will initially utilize the ED until primary care relationships are established.

  • There will be an aggressive surge in e-visits, or online care delivery. Technology, convenience and the desire to improve patient satisfaction will begin to displace in-person office visits with virtual interactions, including email, video conference and online chat.

Sg2 experts will explore how health reform will evolve in 3 distinct phases and the road map to success during the next 10 years: The Prelude (2010-2013), Market Expansion (2014-2017) and Regulation and Restructuring (2018-2020+). Each phase will require different business strategies, competencies and operational objectives.

ABTF will also explore growth and performance imperatives for 5 clinical service lines (cancer, cardiovascular, general medicine, neurosciences and orthopedics/spine) over the next 3 to 5 years, including case examples that demonstrate and define short- and long-term value in the reform era.

"Successfully navigating the reform decade will require the use of new metrics, analytical tools and innovation to identify the right growth opportunities and improve clinical performance across the care continuum," says Sg2 Chairman and CEO Michael Sachs. "During the ABTF conference series, we will focus on our disease-based, reform-ready solutions to help organizations maneuver through the health reform complexities to ensure clinical and financial success."

ABTF will be held several times between now and September in Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, DC, and Atlanta.

Participants will leave with quantitative and qualitative recommendations on how to get ready for reform, manage the change and strengthen their current and future competitive position.
