SGI to Ship LSI Logic 4Gb/s Fibre Channel HBAs to Provide Complete Storage Infrastructure

4Gb/s Solutions From LSI Logic and SGI Allow High-Performance Customers to Overcome Bandwidth Demands of Applications Such as Video Streaming and Government Research

MILPITAS, CA. -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 15, 2005 -- As 4Gb/s Fibre Channel market adoption accelerates, two of the industry's 4Gb/s Fibre Channel time-to-market leaders, LSI Logic (NYSE: LSI) and Silicon Graphics (SGI), have partnered to provide end-users with a complete 4Gb/s SAN infrastructure. LSI Logic today announced that its single and dual-port 4Gb/s Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) will ship with the SGI InfiniteStorage TP9700 4Gb/s storage array.

In data-intensive markets such as media and entertainment and government, for operations to run smoothly, it is essential that personnel have real-time access to high-bandwidth content, without the bottlenecks commonly caused by today's massive growth in digital information. By combining LSI Logic's 4Gb/s Fibre Channel HBAs with the SGI® InfiniteStorage TP97000 storage array, end-users can now take advantage of a complete, non-disruptive 4Gb/s storage infrastructure that provides twice performance of the previous 2Gb/s Fibre Channel generation for increased productivity.

"LSI Logic and SGI have a long history in providing high-performance storage solutions, which is why it is no surprise that we are working together and providing the industry with the first complete 4Gb/s Fibre Channel infrastructure," said Lisa Kimball, product manager for Fibre Channel HBAs at LSI Logic. "When you consider that 4Gb/s Fibre Channel offers twice the performance of 2Gb/s Fibre Channel at nearly the same price, while protecting previous investments, 4Gb/s technology becomes the natural selection for the SAN environments of today and tomorrow. And now LSI Logic and SGI have provided users with a single source to put all the infrastructure pieces in place."

On August 2nd, LSI Logic announced full production shipments of the single-port LSI7104XP-LC and dual-port LSI7204XP-LC 4Gb/s PCI-X HBAs. Each adapter features 800MB/s full duplex Fibre Channel ports, and is capable of performing more than 160,000 I/Os per second. With LSI Logic's 4Gb/s HBAs, users transitioning to 4Gb/s SANs are assured of investment protection as the HBAs are fully compatible with 1 and 2Gb/s legacy products and can automatically detect connection speed so that each port can independently operate at 1, 2 or 4Gb/s. This month, the LSI Logic 4Gb/s HBAs will also begin shipping with the company's MyStorage™ management software, which allows users to control and configure LSI Logic HBAs in their SAN in just three mouse clicks and manage all the adapters in their network from one server.

"In our customers' data-intensive environments the 4Gbit transition is happening very quickly. Customers value the improved performance of their systems provided by the increased throughput of our 4Gb/s infrastructure. They also realize cost savings by having to purchase and administer fewer connections," said Gabriel Broner, senior vice president and general manager, Storage and Software Group, SGI. "These users look to us to continue to deliver complete, leading-edge data and storage solutions ahead of the rest of the industry. We need aggressive partners like LSI Logic to satisfy their voracious requirements."

The SGI TP9700 storage system, which also ships with switches and directors, combines a high-performance 4Gb Fibre Channel architecture with increased host connectivity to deliver industry-leading levels of bandwidth for customers with data-intensive applications.
