The nonprofit Shanghai Roots & Shoots focuses on the environment, animals and global communities. They launched the Million Tree Project to encourage individuals and organizations to minimize their environmental impact, and then asked that they have a hand in making a difference by donating and planting trees in Kulun Qi, Inner Mongolia, a once lush landscape that's now a rapidly expanding desert.
The Shanghai Marriott Hotel Luwan, a new international hotel in Shanghai, joined forces with Roots & Shoots to help raise more than 500,000 RMB for the Million Tree Project. The cost to plant and sustain one tree is 25 RMB, and each one will rid the air of 250kg of CO2 in its lifespan. The organization has planted 400,000 trees as of April 2010, and hopes to reach its goal of 1 million trees by 2014.
To help raise money, Marriott properties in Shanghai, including our business hotel in Shanghai Luwan, participated in fundraising events, including a gala dinner and auction in late October.
