Shared Spectrum Company Applauds FCC's Vote on Opening "TV White Spaces" to Promote Innovative Wireless Devices

VIENNA, VA--(Marketwire - September 23, 2010) -  Today the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to proceed with opening up vacant broadband spectrum channels to new and innovative wireless devices. 

Shared Spectrum Company (SSC), a leading developer of dynamic spectrum access (DSA) radio technology, issued the following statement, which can be attributed to Tom Stroup, CEO of Shared Spectrum Company:

"By opening up available and unused broadcast spectrum bands known as 'TV white spaces,' the FCC is opening the door wider for innovative technologies. SSC was the first company to advocate sharing of unused TV channels to the FCC back in 2000, so we applaud the Commission for taking this huge step forward.

"SSC anticipates that the FCC's revised rules for TV bands will promote competition, innovation and advances in technologies that will prove spectrum sharing is not only viable, but can drive solutions to broadband spectrum access issues across other bands. SSC recently disclosed to the FCC that it is testing software code for specialized television band device (TVBD) detectors that meet -- and in some cases exceed -- the FCC's sensing requirements. These inexpensive detector software modules are designed to run on any TVBD's general-purpose microprocessor (GPP). The modules work together with a geolocation database or on a stand-alone basis to maximize both incumbent protection and available TVBD bandwidth. SSC plans to begin field testing these detectors by the end of October and have them ready for OEM customers by the first quarter of 2011."
