Sharing Breakfast With Kids Who Might Otherwise Miss Out

Easy as Snap, Text, Tweet

MISSION, KS--(Marketwire - March 21, 2011) - (Family Features) Breakfast -- it's the first fuel for your day. It revs up your body and keeps you energized through the morning. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But not everyone is fortunate enough to have breakfast as a part of their daily routine. It's a sad reality that, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one in four American children live in food-insecure households, meaning breakfast may not always be available.

"Breakfast is the first and most important meal of the day. Not eating breakfast can be a real disadvantage for children in the classroom," said Rob Bisceglie, Action for Healthy Kids Executive Director. He adds, "It's not fair for kids to start their day hungry, especially in today's competitive learning environments."

That's why Kellogg has partnered with Action for Healthy Kids on the Share Your Breakfast initiative to encourage Americans to help share breakfast with children who might otherwise miss out. Studies show the power of breakfast to help children throughout the day. Children who eat breakfast:

  • Start the day with energy.
  • Consume valuable nutrients they might otherwise miss.
  • Tend to have lower body mass indexes than children who did not eat breakfast, according to a study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

"At Kellogg, we believe in the power of breakfast and its ability to bring out the best in each day," said Doug VanDeVelde, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Innovation at Kellogg. He adds, "If more schools can offer breakfast to their students, we believe students will be better equipped to reach their potential, both inside and outside the classroom."

But don't worry about sending eggs in the mail or parcels of cereal; helping is easy. Simply upload a photo or description of your breakfast to www.shareyourbreakfast.com and Kellogg will help provide breakfast for kids in school who might otherwise miss out. Here's how it works:

  • Upload your photo to www.shareyourbreakfast.com.
  • Or text your photo with the word "Share" to 21534. (Message and data rates may still apply. Check your carrier for details.)
  • Encourage your friends and family to share via Facebook and by tweeting #ShareUrBreakfast.

For every breakfast shared, Kellogg will donate the monetary equivalent of a school breakfast to Action for Health Kids. The goal is to provide one million breakfasts by the beginning of the 2011 - 2012 school year.

The Share Your Breakfast program runs through July 31, 2011, and you can enter as many times as you'd like. One photo can make a difference. Visit www.shareyourbreakfast.com to get involved.
