Sharkwater Sets Opening Weekend Box Office Records

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - March 26, 2007) -

Attention: Environment, Entertainment and Business Reporters

Rob Stewart's critically acclaimed, award-winning film Sharkwater, made history this weekend with the largest opening weekend of any Canadian documentary.

The highly anticipated film opened in theatres March 23rd across the country, beating the opening box office of Canada's top grossing documentaries Bowling for Columbine and The Corporation as well as the international documentaries, March of the Penguins and An Inconvenient Truth.

After launching at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was named one of Canada's Top Ten, Sharkwater has become the most award-winning documentary of the year, with 10 awards to date including People's Choice and Best Documentary awards at top festivals around the world.

"The buzz around Sharkwater has been amazing," said Stewart who thanked Telefilm Canada for their marketing support for the project and the Toronto International Film Festival for providing the opportunity to screen the film to its audiences.

"Sharkwater brings audiences closer to sharks than ever before, so people can finally understand sharks, and free themselves from that fear."

In a new breed of filmmaking, Stewart takes viewers through the adventure of a lifetime, five years and 15 countries in the making.

"People are aware of most of the environmental issues today, except what's going on in the oceans, that's why this film is important," said Stewart.

Sharkwater (89 minutes) opened theatrically in Canada on March 23, 2007 through Alliance Atlantis.
