Shaw Conference Centre Releases Annual Eco Report Card

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - April 25, 2014) - In celebration of Earth Day week, the Shaw Conference Centre has released its 2013 Sustainability Report Card. This annual benchmarking initiative allows the convention centre to track its commitment to sustainability and its contribution to Edmonton's established reputation as an environmental leader.

Report highlights include:

  • 54% total waste diversion from City of Edmonton landfill in 2013
  • 30,594 water bottles diverted from landfill since installation of water bottle-tracking water fountains
  • 5668 kg food donated to Edmonton's Food Bank through Second Helping program
  • achievement of BOMA BEST Level 2 recertification
  • Eight conventions achieving green meeting standards in 2013
  • 1,869 kg carbon dioxide taken up by hundreds of plants in the convention centre's landmark atrium
  • new permaculture-influenced landscape projects
  • installation of new Sustainability Story Wall on the pedway level
  • sustainable purchasing for 53% of ongoing consumables, such as eco-friendly paper, office supplies, etc.

"This report card demonstrates that we can maintain sustainable best practices even in years when our utility costs increase due to the growing number of events we host," says Cliff Higuchi, vice-president and general manager of the Shaw Conference Centre. "We are one of the few convention centres with a dedicated sustainability coordinator who facilitates a comprehensive program that assists our clients with green meetings and reduces our environmental impact as a facility."

The Sustainability Report Card is a component of "Simple Steps," an initiative launched in 2008 by the Shaw Conference Centre to encourage participation in environmentally and socially sustainable practices throughout the facility. Event clients can access green meeting guides, waste calculation reports, locally sourced menus, green itineraries and best practices advice to help plan an environmentally responsible convention, meeting or event.
